Phoenix surprised herself by falling asleep quickly. She had assumed she would be unable to sleep, twisting one way and turning another until dawn, the sheets ending up a knotted mess. After all, her stomach had been full of anxiety regarding the opening for days.

Instead, after resigning herself to a sleepless night, she found herself opening her eyes to a clock which told her it was seven in the morning. She had slept for nine hours. Refreshed, she ran a bath and relaxed in the subtly fragrant oil—a scent she had picked out.

Had it really been over six months since she had been abducted? So much had happened, yet so little had changed. She was still a prisoner of Antoine’s, even though she now had freedom to move about the city. Phoenix had no doubt he had someone spy on her whenever she left the grounds. He was not overly intelligent, but he wasn’t stupid.

He also still checked all of her bags when she returned home from shopping. There was no way she could get a laptop in to alert authorities. Even if she could, her mission had always been much larger. Besides, she now had the girls to worry about. The spies were unnecessary, as she hadn’t even thought up the beginning of a plan for how she would ruin Antoine, but it wouldn’t be some weak cry for help on the internet.

No, when the revenge came, it would be brutal, deep, and larger than life. She would take him down so far he would never get up.

Phoenix held no illusions. She knew others would be taken down with him. The way she saw it was simple: any man who willingly paid to screw a female, let alone if the female was underage, made himself fair game. Oh, she wouldn’t take them all down, but she would learn which were the vilest ones and make sure they also felt her wrath when the time came.

It seemed so far away. Many times each day she felt herself close to slipping into despondency, feeling she was no closer to her goal. It could take years! Those were years where she should have been having fun, dating, learning to love. Instead, all she felt was hate.

Even though it still could be a few years before she had a solid plan, progress had been made. Antoine almost completely trusted her now. It was unlikely his trust would ever be complete without the help of his drinking. That little item was getting worse, and soon it would make him even more dependent on her. Eventually he would tell himself it was okay, she had proven herself.

Until it happened, she just had to continue to keep her eyes open. Henry Ford had once said “Luck is when dedication and preparation meet opportunity”. She had once used the quote in a report at school. Well, she was dedicated to her goal and continued to prepare daily.

All she needed was the opportunity. One small window opened just a crack.
